Hi Rachael, thanks for chatting to me about this exciting new show. You’ve been in a lot of shows. Why did you want to be involved in this production?
The Wizard of Oz is a classic. Everyone knows the story and to be a part of a show that is so well loved is always very exciting. Also being able to perform at beautiful open air venues was something that really appealed to me. Of course getting a pair of ruby slippers may also have had something to do with it 🙂
This is a frequently performed show, how is this production bringing something new to this story?
Our production is brimming with original songs and has a fabulously funny script that allows the audience to get completely involved in the story. It’s still full of the characters we all know and love but *spoiler alert* it may not end exactly how you’re expecting. You’ll just have to come and see for yourself!
What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
I don’t have a particular routine or ritual that I have to complete but I do enjoy having a good dance to the show’s intro music in the wings!
What’s it like being on tour? Who do you think will be the best at providing some comic relief when everyone is exhausted?
Being on tour is great because we get to see so many beautiful parts of the UK, especially as our performances are open air. It can be tiring as it does involve a lot of travelling. Fortunately, I know lots of car games to keep us occupied on long drives! I think everyone has their own way of keeping team spirits high whether it’s with jokes or just being able to make a really good cup of tea. I personally love to snack so will be making sure the cast are well topped up with sweets and treats.
I was in Wizard of Oz when I was younger as one of the lullaby league – I would’ve loved to have played Dorothy but was obviously too young – how does it feel to play Dorothy?
It’s very exciting indeed! Dorothy is a great character. She’s not just your typical fairytale leading lady, she’s a very determined girl and can hold her own when she meets the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s nice to be playing a character who is both kind and caring but also very brave.
What would you ask the wizard of oz for if you visited him?
I think I would ask for a puppy, as like Dorothy I am very much a dog person. Although he wouldn’t be called Toto, he would be a Sausage Dog called Colin.
If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
There are so many shows that I’d love to be in but if I had a magic wand I’d probably become 10 years old again so that I could be in Matilda. I think the music in the show is brilliant…it’s often what I listen to when travelling!
