It’s a new year and an exciting time for The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. With a whole host of excellent shows coming its way (starting with Crazy for You).4. CRAZY FOR YOU. Company. Photo Richard Davenport_preview

All this alongside a new Artistic Director and an independent charitable trust taking over its management, this looks to be a big year for the theatre.

The Marlowe is going from strength to strength every year, gaining bigger shows and audiences. It also broke records this year with Peter Pan, as having the biggest selling panto in the South East with sales of 95,875 tickets. This is not surprising; complete with a fabulous cast, a good level of fun for both adults and children alike and brilliant script and music writing, it had to be a winner. Peter-Pan_web-2000x1000 If you missed it before Christmas, you have just a few more days (closing on the 14th January) to see Barry, I mean Sean Williamson, Wendy Peters, CBeebies favourite, Gemma Hunt and of course our favourite Marlowe duo, Ben Roddy and Lloyd Hollet.  More information can be found here. https://marlowetheatre.com/shows/peter-pan/

2018 also sees a change over of management as Canterbury City Council hands it over to a charitable trust. This will enable theatre bosses to bid for cash from a wide range of funding streams which previously they have been unable to access.JC-image-1200x675 This not only results in savings for taxpayers but will also enable the Marlowe team to be even more creative and develop stronger links with the community. With this change comes the appointment of the award-winning Jonathan Church CBE as the new Marlowe Trust’s first Chairman. The handover will occur this spring.

First up in this year’s calendar of shows is Waterhill Theatre’s production of Crazy For You starring Claire Sweeney and Tom Chambers.

Mistaken identities, plot twists, heartbreak, happiness and a wealth of memorable tunes, including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Embraceable You, all feature in this exhilarating celebration of the great Broadway musicals. 3. Tickets, priced from £28.25 to £48.25 (concessions available), are from the Box Office on 01227 787787, or http://www.marlowetheatre.com

The rest of the year sees a broad range of musicals, comedy, ballet and so much more in both the Studio and the main auditorium, including the interactive version of Beowolfin February, the VERY exciting tour of The Band in March,  the return of Vamos Theatre in April with Brave Face, and Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella in May – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
