“There are no new steps!” But as of March 29th, there will be when beginner dancer, Fran has the audacity to approach Scott Hastings, an open amaetur, to dance with her once more, as Strictly Ballroom comes to Picadilly Theatre.
If you haven’t seen this film, get on to it and then get tickets for what is set to be a fabulous production. The cast has serious dancing prowess and should not disappoint. Lead by Jonny Labey, Zizi Strallen and Will Young, alongside Anna Fancolini and Gerard Horan, this musical also features some truly iconic music such as Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time.
The story goes something like this – Scott Hastings is a champion calibre ballroom dancer, but much to the annoyance and humiliation of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing “his own steps”.

Fran is a beginning dancer and a bit of an ugly duckly who has the gall to ask to be Scott’s partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to (fox)trot out of his life. Together, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and prove the Ballroom Confederation wrong – there are new steps.
The production originated in Australia where it was created by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Drew McOnie (whose dazzling choreography for In the Heights earned him the 2016 Olivier Award) will direct and choreograph the West End premiere, with a book by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.
The music, the dancing, the story and, what I hope, will be some fabulous heavy Australian makes me extremely excited for this show.
